Solomon declares a wise son hears his father’s instruction, but a scorner hears not rebuke, a man eating good by the fruit of his mouth, but the soul of the transgressors eating violence, he who keeps his mouth keeps his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction, the soul of the sluggard desiring, and having nothing, but the soul of the diligent being made fat.
Solomon describes how “hope,” “tocheleth” in Hebrew, deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life, whoever despises the word shall be destroyed, but he who fears the commandment shall be rewarded, the law of the wise being a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death, good understanding giving favor, but the way of transgressors being hard, every prudent man dealing with knowledge, but a fool laying open his folly.
Solomon closes describing how a wicked messenger falls into mischief, but a faithful ambassador is health, poverty and shame shall be to him who refuses instruction, but he who regards reproof shall be honored, the desire accomplished being sweet to the soul, but it being abomination to fools to depart from evil, he who walks with wise men shall be wise, but a companion of fools shall be destroyed, closing with the observation that he who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him chastens him betimes, a wise son making a glad father, a righteous man eating to the satisfying of his soul, but the belly of the wicked shall want.
Solomon’s memorable image, hope deferred makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a tree of life, captures the genuine emotional toll of prolonged waiting alongside the real joy that eventual fulfillment brings. His observation that he who walks with wise men becomes wise, while companions of fools face destruction, offers practical wisdom about how deeply chosen relationships shape our own character and eventual outcomes.
