Solomon declares a false balance is abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight, when pride comes, then comes shame, but with the lowly is wisdom, the integrity of the upright guiding them, but the perverseness of transgressors destroying them, riches not profiting in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivering from death.
Solomon describes how the “generous,” “nadib” in Hebrew, soul shall be made fat, and he who waters shall be watered also himself, the people cursing him who withholds grain, but blessing being upon the head of him who sells it, he who diligently seeks good procuring favor, but trouble coming to him who seeks mischief, he who trusts in his riches shall fall, but the righteous shall flourish as a branch, he who troubles his own house shall inherit the wind, and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.
Solomon continues addressing wealth, generosity, and character extensively, there being that scatters, and yet increases, and there being that withholds more than is meet, but it tends to poverty, the liberal soul being made fat, and he who waters being watered also himself, the people cursing him who withholds grain, closing with observations about honest, righteous living bringing genuine security, while wickedness ultimately proves unstable and self-destructive, in the way of righteousness being life, and in the pathway thereof there being no death.
Solomon’s memorable declaration that a false balance is abomination to the Lord establishes honest business dealing as a genuine spiritual and moral concern, not merely a practical or legal matter separate from faith.
