Solomon urges his son to keep his words, and lay up his commandments with him, keeping his commandments and living, and his law as the apple of his eye, binding them upon his fingers, writing them upon the table of his heart, saying to wisdom, “Thou art my sister,” calling understanding his kinswoman, that they may keep him from the strange woman, from the stranger who flatters with her words.
Solomon describes observing among the simple ones a young man void of “understanding,” “lev” in Hebrew, meaning heart or mind, passing through the street near her corner, going the way to her house, in the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night, when a woman meets him with the attire of a harlot, subtle of heart, loud and stubborn, her feet not abiding in her house, now outside, now in the streets, lying in wait at every corner, catching him and kissing him, saying with an impudent face that she has peace offerings, has decked her bed with coverings, has perfumed her bed with myrrh and cinnamon, urging him to take their fill of love until the morning.
Solomon describes with much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him, so he went after her straightway, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, until a dart strikes through his liver, as a bird hastens to the snare, and knows not that it is for his life, urging his children to hearken to him, and attend to the words of his mouth, not letting their heart decline to her ways, nor going astray in her paths, since many strong men have been cast down by her, her house being the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death, this vivid, cautionary narrative serving as a memorable warning against the very real dangers of sexual temptation.
Solomon’s vivid narrative style in this chapter, telling a specific, detailed story rather than merely stating abstract principle, demonstrates how concrete illustration can teach moral lessons more memorably and persuasively than general instruction alone. His observation that the young man lacked understanding highlights how genuine wisdom, rightly applied, could have prevented this entire tragic, entirely avoidable sequence of events.
