Solomon describes his purpose for these proverbs, to know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding, to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity, to give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion, declaring famously, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of “knowledge,” “da’at” in Hebrew, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Solomon urges his son to hear the instruction of his father, and not forsake the law of his mother, warning against sinners who entice him, urging him not to consent, describing violent men who lie in wait for blood, though Solomon warns that in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird, since such greedy schemers ultimately lay wait for their own blood, and lurk privily for their own lives.
Solomon personifies wisdom crying aloud in the streets, uttering her voice in the chief places of concourse, asking how long the simple will love simplicity, and scorners delight in their scorning, promising that if they turn at her reproof, she will pour out her spirit unto them, but warns that because she called and they refused, stretched out her hand and no one regarded, they shall call upon her but she will not answer, seeking her early but not finding her, since they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord, closing with the assurance that whoever listens to wisdom shall dwell safely, and be quiet from fear of evil.
Solomon’s foundational declaration, that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, establishes wisdom’s entire starting point as genuine reverence for God rather than mere accumulated information or clever cunning. His personification of wisdom crying out publicly, freely available yet so often ignored, reminds readers that genuine understanding is actively offered rather than hidden, though it still requires a willing, humble heart to actually receive it.
