The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Shone” it comes from the Hebrew Word “qaran” which means “to shine, to send out rays of light.”
God gives Moses a second set of tablets, and Moses comes down the mountain looking completely different. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 34.
God instructs Moses to cut two new tablets of stone like the first ones he shattered, and to come up Mount Sinai alone the next morning. There, the Lord descends in a cloud, stands with Moses, and proclaims His own name and character in remarkable detail. “The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,” while still holding the guilty accountable. Moses immediately bows and worships, asking God once again to go among this stiffnecked people, pardon their sin, and take them as His own inheritance.
God renews His covenant with Israel, promising to do marvels never before seen in any nation, and warning them again not to make covenants with the peoples of the land they are entering, nor intermarry with them, since it would lead Israel into idolatry. God repeats several core commands, the feast of unleavened bread, dedicating the firstborn, keeping the Sabbath, and observing the appointed feasts throughout the year, along with instructions about offerings and firstfruits. Moses remains on the mountain forty days and nights without eating bread or drinking water, and writes the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments, on the new tablets. When Moses comes down from Sinai, his face shines so brightly from having spoken with God that Aaron and the people are afraid to come near him. The Hebrew word for this radiant shining is “qaran.” Moses calls them near, gives them all God’s commands, and from then on wears a veil over his face except when speaking directly with the Lord.
Moses’ shining face was not something he could manufacture himself. It was simply the natural result of spending extended, direct time in God’s presence. Genuine closeness with God tends to leave a visible mark on a life, evident to everyone around, even if the person carrying it barely notices it themselves.
