EXODUS 33 ‐ “Moses Sees God’s Glory”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Presence” it comes from the Hebrew Word “panim” which means “face, presence.”

After the golden calf disaster, Moses asks God for something extraordinary, to actually see His glory. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 33.

God tells Moses to lead the people onward toward the promised land, but warns that He Himself will not go up in their midst, since His presence among such a stiffnecked people might consume them along the way. Hearing this troubling news, the people mourn and remove their ornaments in genuine grief. Moses takes a tent outside the camp, calling it the tabernacle of the congregation, and everyone who seeks the Lord goes out to it. There, “the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend.”

Moses pleads boldly with God, asking Him to reconsider going with the people directly, saying, “If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.” The Hebrew word for presence here is “panim,” literally meaning face. God relents, agreeing that His presence will go with Moses and give him rest. Encouraged, Moses makes an even bolder request. “I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.”

God agrees to make all His goodness pass before Moses and proclaim His name before him, but explains that Moses cannot see God’s face directly and live. Instead, God places Moses in a cleft of the rock, covers him with His hand as His glory passes by, and then removes His hand so Moses can see God’s back, though never His face directly.

Even after Israel’s serious failure with the golden calf, Moses pursued an even closer relationship with God rather than pulling away in shame. God’s presence, not merely His blessings or promises, was what Moses ultimately wanted most. That kind of hunger for God’s actual nearness is worth pursuing in any season, especially after failure.
