God instructs Moses to build a small altar of incense, overlaid with gold, positioned in front of the veil near the ark, where Aaron is to burn sweet incense every morning and evening when he tends the lamps, a perpetual practice before the Lord throughout Israel’s generations. God also institutes an atonement offering, requiring every Israelite counted in a census to give a half shekel as “a ransom for his soul unto the LORD,” the same amount required from rich and poor alike, so that no plague comes upon them when numbered.
God describes a bronze laver, a washing basin positioned between the tabernacle and the altar, where Aaron and his sons must wash their hands and feet before entering the tabernacle or approaching the altar to minister, “that they die not,” emphasizing again how seriously this holy service must be approached. God then gives Moses a precise, sacred recipe for anointing oil, made of specific spices and pure olive oil, to be used exclusively for anointing the tabernacle, its furnishings, and the priests themselves, strictly forbidden for any common or personal use.
Similarly, God gives an exact formula for the incense to be burned before Him, made holy specifically for worship, and forbidden for anyone to reproduce for their own private use, “whosoever shall make like unto that… he shall be cut off from his people.” Every ingredient and formula in this chapter reinforces the same principle, that certain things are set apart entirely for God’s worship and are not to be treated casually or repurposed for ordinary life.
The strict prohibition against copying the holy anointing oil or incense for personal use highlights something easy to miss, that some things genuinely belong to God alone and should never be treated as common or convenient. Reverence sometimes means recognizing what is not meant to be casually accessible.
