God gives Moses a detailed set of judgments, “mishpat” in Hebrew, meaning ordinances or legal rulings, meant to apply the Ten Commandments practically to daily life. The chapter opens with regulations for Hebrew servants, who are to serve six years and go free in the seventh without owing anything further, a remarkably limited and humane form of servitude compared to surrounding cultures. Provisions are also given for female servants, requiring specific protections for their wellbeing depending on the circumstances of their service.
The law then addresses violence and its consequences directly. Anyone who strikes another person fatally is to be put to death, though a distinction is made for unintentional killing, for which a place of refuge is provided. Striking or cursing one’s parents carries severe consequences, and kidnapping a person to sell them is a capital offense. Regulations follow for cases of injury between people, including the well-known principle “eye for eye, tooth for tooth,” establishing that punishment must be proportional rather than excessive.
The chapter also addresses responsibility for negligence, such as an ox known to gore people that is not properly restrained, holding its owner accountable for resulting harm. Throughout, these laws consistently protect the vulnerable, servants, the injured, and even someone accidentally hurt by another’s negligence, establishing a legal system rooted in fairness rather than the strength or status of whoever holds more power.
These laws might read as strange or harsh through modern eyes, but in their ancient context, they placed real, enforceable limits on how much power one person could exercise over another, especially servants and the vulnerable. God’s justice consistently protects those most at risk of being exploited by whoever holds greater strength or status.
