God speaks the Ten Commandments directly to Israel, beginning with His own identity. “I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.” The Hebrew term for these commandments is essentially “the ten words,” “dabar” meaning word or matter. He commands that Israel have no other gods before Him, make no graven images, not take His name in vain, and remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
The remaining commandments turn toward how Israel treats one another, honor your father and mother, do not kill, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness against your neighbor, and do not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor. Together, these ten commands establish the moral foundation for the covenant relationship God is forming with His people, love and loyalty toward God expressed through love and integrity toward others.
Witnessing the thunder, lightning, trumpet, and smoking mountain, the people are terrified and tremble, and they ask Moses to speak to them himself rather than having God speak directly, “lest we die.” Moses reassures them that God has come specifically to test them, so that His fear will remain before them and keep them from sinning. God then instructs Moses regarding proper worship, forbidding idols of silver or gold, and describing simple altars of earth or unhewn stone, since using a tool on the stone would profane it.
The Ten Commandments were not given as a burdensome list to earn God’s favor. They were given as the foundation of a relationship God had already initiated by rescuing Israel from Egypt first. Obedience here was always meant to be a grateful response to grace already received, not a way to earn it.
