The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Difference” it comes from the Hebrew Word “palah” which means “to distinguish, to set apart.”
One more plague is coming, and this time, it will reach directly into Pharaoh’s own household. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 11.
God tells Moses that one final plague remains, after which Pharaoh will not merely let Israel go, but will drive them out of Egypt completely. God instructs the Israelites to ask their Egyptian neighbors for articles of silver and gold, and the text notes that “the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians,” and that Moses himself was highly regarded throughout the land.
Moses delivers God’s final, devastating warning to Pharaoh. At midnight, the Lord will go out through the midst of Egypt, and every firstborn in the land will die, from Pharaoh’s own firstborn son on the throne down to the firstborn of the lowest servant, along with the firstborn of every animal. Yet even in this judgment, God draws a clear line, promising that “against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue,” so that Egypt will know the Lord makes a difference between His people and Pharaoh’s.
Moses predicts that Pharaoh’s own servants will eventually come and bow before him, begging Israel to leave. He delivers this message in great anger and departs from Pharaoh. The chapter closes by reminding the reader that the Lord had hardened Pharaoh’s heart throughout, so that all these wonders would be multiplied in the land of Egypt before the final release finally comes.
God’s warnings were never vague or uncertain. He told Moses and Pharaoh exactly what was coming, in specific, unmistakable detail, and exactly what would make Israel different from Egypt in that judgment. When God draws a line of protection around His people, it holds firm no matter how devastating the surrounding circumstances become.
