The psalmist calls everyone to praise the Lord from the heavens, praising Him in the heights, praising Him all His angels, praising Him all His hosts, praising Him sun and moon, praising Him all the stars of light, praising Him heavens of heavens, and the waters above the heavens.
The psalmist calls these to praise the name of the Lord, since He commanded, and they were “created,” “bara” in Hebrew, establishing them forever and ever, giving a decree which shall not pass, calling the earth to praise the Lord as well, dragons and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and vapor, stormy wind fulfilling His word, mountains and all hills, fruitful trees and all cedars, beasts and all cattle, creeping things and flying fowl.
The psalmist calls kings of the earth and all people, princes and all judges of the earth, both young men and maidens, old men and children, to praise the name of the Lord, since His name alone is excellent, His glory being above the earth and heaven, exalting the horn of His people, the praise of all His saints, even the children of Israel, a people near to Him, closing with a final call to praise the Lord, a sweeping, comprehensive psalm calling the entirety of creation itself, from angels to insects, to join together in unified worship.
This psalm’s sweeping, comprehensive call to praise, addressing angels, celestial bodies, weather patterns, animals, and every category of human being, envisions worship as the entire universe’s natural, unified response to its Creator rather than a merely human religious activity. Its inclusion of seemingly mundane elements like snow, hail, and creeping things reminds readers that even the most ordinary aspects of creation carry genuine capacity to glorify God simply by existing according to His design.
