The psalmist declares it is good to sing praises to their God, praise being pleasant and comely, describing how the Lord builds up Jerusalem, and gathers together the outcasts of Israel, healing the “brokenhearted,” “shavur lev” in Hebrew, and binding up their wounds, telling the number of the stars, and calling them all by their names.
The psalmist describes God as great, and of great power, His understanding being infinite, lifting up the meek, but casting the wicked down to the ground, urging everyone to sing to the Lord with thanksgiving, singing praise upon the harp to their God, who covers the heaven with clouds, prepares rain for the earth, and makes grass grow upon the mountains, giving food to the beast, and to the young ravens which cry.
The psalmist declares God does not delight in the strength of the horse, nor take pleasure in the legs of a man, but takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His mercy, urging Jerusalem to praise the Lord, praising her God, O Zion, since He has strengthened the bars of her gates, blessed her children within her, and made peace in her borders, filling her with the finest of the wheat, sending forth His commandment upon earth, His word running very swiftly, giving snow like wool, and scattering the hoarfrost like ashes, showing His word to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel, having not dealt so with any other nation, closing with the observation that they have not known His judgments, praising the Lord.
This psalm’s beautiful pairing, God who heals the brokenhearted also numbers and names every single star, reveals a God intimately attentive to both cosmic scale and deeply personal human pain simultaneously without any tension between the two. Its observation that God takes pleasure not in raw strength but in those who fear Him and hope in His mercy redirects value away from impressive human power toward genuine, humble reliance on Him.
