The psalmist declares he will praise the Lord while he lives, singing praises to his God while he has any being, warning not to put trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help, since his breath goes forth, he returns to his earth, in that very day his thoughts perish.
The psalmist declares blessed is he who has the God of Jacob for his “help,” “ezer” in Hebrew, whose hope is in the Lord his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps truth forever, executing judgment for the oppressed, giving food to the hungry, the Lord loosing the prisoners.
The psalmist describes the Lord opening the eyes of the blind, raising those who are bowed down, loving the righteous, preserving the strangers, relieving the fatherless and widow, but turning upside down the way of the wicked, closing with the declaration, “The LORD shall reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Praise ye the LORD,” a fitting, sweeping catalog of God’s genuine, reliable care extending to every category of vulnerable, overlooked person.
This psalm’s blunt warning against trusting princes, whose very breath and plans perish with their mortality, offers a sobering corrective to any generation tempted to place excessive confidence in powerful human leaders rather than God alone. Its extensive catalog of divine care, for the blind, the bowed down, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, reveals God’s particular attentiveness toward exactly those the world often overlooks or undervalues.
