David declares, “Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight: My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust,” asking what man is, that God takes knowledge of him, or the son of man, that He makes account of him.
David compares man to “vanity,” “hevel” in Hebrew, his days being as a shadow that passes away, asking the Lord to bow His heavens and come down, touching the mountains, and they shall smoke, casting forth lightning and scattering His enemies, sending out His arrows and destroying them, asking to be rid and delivered out of great waters, from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaks vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
David promises to sing a new song to God, upon a psaltery and instrument of ten strings will he sing praises to Him, who gives salvation to kings, delivering David His servant from the hurtful sword, praying for prosperity, sons like plants grown up in their youth, daughters as corner stones polished after the similitude of a palace, garners full, sheep bringing forth thousands, oxen strong to labor, no breaking in, nor going out, nor complaining in their streets, closing with the observation, “Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.”
David’s tender question, what is man that you take knowledge of him, echoing similar wonder found in Psalm 8, reflects genuine amazement that God bothers to notice and engage with such brief, transient creatures. This psalm’s closing vision of national flourishing, healthy families, full storehouses, and thriving livestock, envisions blessing extending across every practical dimension of a genuinely well-ordered, God-honoring society.
