David declares he cried to the Lord with his voice, with his voice to the Lord he made his supplication, pouring out his complaint before Him, showing before Him his trouble, written while he was in the cave, describing how when his spirit was overwhelmed within him, then God knew his path.
David describes how in the way in which he walked, they secretly laid a “snare,” “moqesh” in Hebrew, for him, looking on his right hand, and observing, but no man knowing him, refuge failing him, no man caring for his soul, crying to the Lord, declaring Him his refuge, and his portion in the land of the living.
David pleads for attention to his cry, since he is brought very low, delivering him from his persecutors, since they are stronger than he, asking to be brought out of prison, that he may praise God’s name, promising that the righteous shall compass him about, for God shall deal bountifully with him, closing this raw, honest cave prayer with confident anticipation of eventual deliverance despite his current, genuinely desperate isolation.
David’s honest admission that no man cared for his soul during this cave hideout gives genuine voice to the profound loneliness that can accompany real crisis, even while surrounded by circumstances that might otherwise seem to offer companionship or support. This psalm’s turn toward declaring God alone as his refuge and portion shows genuine faith finding sufficient comfort in divine presence even amid complete human abandonment.
