David pleads, “LORD, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee. Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice,” asking the Lord to set a watch before his mouth, and keep the door of his lips.
David asks that his heart not be inclined to any evil thing, to practice wicked works with those who work iniquity, asking not to eat of their “delicacies,” “man’am” in Hebrew, welcoming instead the righteous smiting him, counting it a kindness, and reproving him, counting it an excellent oil which shall not break his head, since his prayer shall still be against the deeds of the wicked.
David asks that their judges be overthrown in stony places, that they may hear his words, for they are sweet, describing bones scattered at the grave’s mouth as when one cuts and cleaves wood upon the earth, closing with his eyes being toward the Lord God, in Him he trusts, asking not to leave his soul destitute, keeping him from the snares laid for him, and the gins of the workers of iniquity, letting the wicked fall into their own nets, while he himself withal escapes.
David’s request that his prayer rise like incense and his lifted hands be as the evening sacrifice offers a beautiful picture of prayer as genuine, fragrant worship rather than merely functional petition. His welcome of righteous correction, counting a friend’s rebuke as excellent oil rather than unwelcome criticism, models the kind of humility that values honest accountability over comfortable but potentially harmful flattery.
