PSALMS 139 ‐ “O Lord, Thou Hast Searched Me, and Known Me”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Knowledge” it comes from the Hebrew Word “da’at” which means “knowledge.”

David marvels at God’s complete, intimate knowledge of him from before his very birth. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 139.

David declares, “O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off,” describing how God compasses his path and his lying down, and is acquainted with all his ways, knowing his words before they are even on his tongue.

David marvels at this “knowledge,” “da’at” in Hebrew, being too wonderful for him, too high for him to attain, asking where he might go from God’s spirit, or flee from His presence, since if he ascends up into heaven, God is there, if he makes his bed in hell, He is there also, if he takes the wings of the morning and dwells in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there God’s hand shall lead him, and His right hand shall hold him.

David declares that God formed his inward parts, and covered him in his mother’s womb, praising Him, since he is fearfully and wonderfully made, marvellous being God’s works, and his soul knowing this very well, his substance not being hidden from Him when he was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth, God’s eyes seeing his unformed substance, and in His book all his members being written, closing with an invitation for God to search him, and know his heart, trying him, and knowing his thoughts, seeing if there is any wicked way in him, and leading him in the way everlasting.

David’s stunning declaration, I am fearfully and wonderfully made, offers one of Scripture’s most powerful affirmations of human dignity and worth, grounded specifically in God’s intimate, careful craftsmanship rather than mere chance or coincidence. His observation that God’s presence extends everywhere, even to the highest heaven and the deepest sea, provides genuine comfort that no location or circumstance ever places anyone truly beyond His reach or care.
