PSALMS 116 ‐ “I Love the Lord, Because He Hath Heard My Voice”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Gracious” it comes from the Hebrew Word “channun” which means “gracious.”

The psalmist expresses deep gratitude for deliverance from death and near despair. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 116.

The psalmist declares he loves the Lord, because He has heard his voice and his supplications, since He has inclined His ear to him, therefore he will call upon Him as long as he lives, describing how the sorrows of death compassed him, and the pains of hell got hold upon him, finding trouble and sorrow, yet calling upon the name of the Lord, “O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.”

The psalmist declares the Lord is “gracious,” “channun” in Hebrew, and righteous, their God being merciful, the Lord preserving the simple, being brought low, and He helped him, urging his own soul to return to its rest, since the Lord has dealt bountifully with him, delivering his soul from death, his eyes from tears, and his feet from falling, promising to walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

The psalmist declares he believed, therefore he spoke, being greatly afflicted, saying in his haste that all men are liars, asking what he shall render to the Lord for all His benefits toward him, promising to take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord, paying his vows to the Lord now in the presence of all His people, declaring that precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints, closing with a vow to offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay his vows in the courts of the Lord’s house, in the midst of Jerusalem, praising the Lord.

The psalmist’s tender declaration, I love the Lord because He heard my voice, roots genuine devotion directly in personal, experienced answered prayer rather than mere abstract obligation or duty. His honest admission of having said in his haste that all men are liars reveals genuine emotional processing during real crisis, a moment of understandable despair that God’s faithfulness ultimately overcame.
