The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Silver” it comes from the Hebrew Word “keceph” which means “silver.”
The psalmist deflects all glory from Israel to God alone, mocking the powerlessness of idols. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 115.
The psalmist declares, “Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake,” asking why the heathen should say, “Where is now their God?” since their God is in the heavens, He has done whatever He has pleased.
The psalmist mocks the powerlessness of idols, “silver,” “keceph” in Hebrew, and gold, the work of men’s hands, having mouths but they speak not, eyes but they see not, ears but they hear not, noses but they smell not, hands but they handle not, feet but they walk not, neither do they speak through their throat, declaring that those who make them are like them, as is everyone who trusts in them.
The psalmist urges Israel to trust in the Lord, He is their help and their shield, urging the house of Aaron and all who fear the Lord likewise to trust in Him, declaring the Lord has been mindful of them, and will bless them, blessing the house of Israel, the house of Aaron, and those who fear the Lord, both small and great, promising the Lord shall increase them more and more, they and their children, being blessed of the Lord who made heaven and earth, closing with a declaration that the dead do not praise the Lord, but the living shall bless Him from this time forth and forevermore.
This psalm’s opening insistence, not to us but to your name be the glory, models genuine humility that deliberately deflects credit away from human achievement toward God’s own name and reputation alone. Its mocking description of lifeless idols, mouths that cannot speak, eyes that cannot see, offers a sharp, memorable contrast highlighting the genuine, living power of the true God compared to every powerless human-made substitute.
