The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Discretion” it comes from the Hebrew Word “mishpat” which means “judgment, discretion.”
This companion acrostic psalm describes the flourishing life of one who genuinely fears the Lord. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 112.
The psalmist declares, “Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments,” describing how his seed shall be mighty upon earth, the generation of the upright being blessed, wealth and riches being in his house, and his righteousness enduring forever.
The psalmist describes how light arises in the darkness for the upright, this man being gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous, a good man showing favor, and lending, guiding his affairs with “discretion,” “mishpat” in Hebrew, since he shall never be moved, the righteous being in everlasting remembrance, not afraid of evil tidings, his heart being fixed, trusting in the Lord.
The psalmist declares his heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he sees his desire upon his enemies, having dispersed abroad, and given to the poor, his righteousness enduring forever, his horn being exalted with honor, closing with a stark contrast, that the wicked shall see it, and be grieved, gnashing with his teeth, and melting away, the desire of the wicked perishing, a fitting companion piece to the previous acrostic psalm, now describing the flourishing character and life of the person who genuinely embodies that earlier psalm’s call to fear the Lord.
This companion acrostic psalm’s detailed portrait of the God-fearing person, generous, stable, unafraid of bad news, offers a concrete, practical picture of what genuine reverence for God actually produces in daily character and conduct. Its emphasis on generosity toward the poor as a natural fruit of righteousness reminds readers that authentic fear of the Lord always finds expression in tangible care for others, not merely private devotion alone.
