The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Power” it comes from the Hebrew Word “chayil” which means “power, strength, might.”
David describes a mysterious, exalted figure who is both his descendant and his Lord. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 110.
David declares, “The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool,” a striking declaration Jesus Himself would later use to challenge the Pharisees, asking how David’s own descendant could also be his Lord, since the Messiah must therefore be greater than merely a human king.
David describes the Lord sending the rod of His strength out of Zion, urging this figure to rule in the midst of his enemies, his people being willing in the day of his “power,” “chayil” in Hebrew, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning, having the dew of his youth.
David declares the Lord has sworn, and will not repent, “Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek,” language the New Testament book of Hebrews develops extensively regarding Christ’s unique priesthood, describing the Lord at his right hand striking through kings in the day of His wrath, judging among the heathen, filling the places with dead bodies, and wounding the heads over many countries, this brief but profound psalm containing some of the Old Testament’s clearest messianic prophecy concerning both Christ’s kingship and His eternal priesthood.
This brief psalm’s puzzling declaration, that David’s own Lord would sit at God’s right hand, became one of the most frequently quoted Old Testament passages throughout the entire New Testament, providing crucial scriptural support for understanding Christ’s unique identity as both David’s descendant and David’s Lord. Its unusual pairing of kingship and Melchizedek’s priesthood anticipates Christ’s own combined roles as both eternal King and eternal Priest, a combination without precedent anywhere else in Israel’s history.
