The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Adversary” it comes from the Hebrew Word “satan” which means “adversary, accuser.”
David pleads urgently for justice against a slanderous, malicious enemy. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 109.
David pleads with the God of his praise not to hold His peace, since the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against him, speaking against him with a lying tongue, compassing him about also with words of hatred, and fighting against him without a cause, rewarding him evil for good, and hatred for his love.
David describes his enemy’s wickedness in extended, poetic detail, asking that a wicked man be set over him, and that an “adversary,” “satan” in Hebrew, meaning accuser, stand at his right hand, that when he is judged he may be condemned, and his prayer become sin, his days being few, and another taking his office, describing how he did not remember to show mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, and the brokenhearted, to slay them.
David turns to plead for himself, asking God to deal with him for His name’s sake, since His mercy is good, delivering him, since he is poor and needy, and his heart is wounded within him, passing away like a shadow, promising to greatly praise the Lord with his mouth, and praise Him among the multitude, since He shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those who condemn his soul, closing with a vow to give great thanks to the Lord with his mouth, and praise Him among the multitude.
David’s extended, poetic imprecation against his enemy reflects raw, honest anger channeled into prayer rather than personal revenge, entrusting genuine justice entirely to God rather than taking matters into his own hands. This psalm’s turn toward personal vulnerability, describing himself as poor, needy, and wounded, reveals that even fierce prayers against injustice ultimately flow from genuine woundedness rather than mere abstract theological argument.
