The psalmist declares, “Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain,” describing how He lays the beams of His chambers in the waters, makes the clouds His chariot, and walks upon the wings of the wind.
The psalmist describes God’s “wisdom,” “chokmah” in Hebrew, displayed throughout creation, sending springs into the valleys running among the hills, giving drink to every beast of the field, the wild donkeys quenching their thirst, birds of the heaven having their habitation, watering the hills from His chambers, causing grass to grow for cattle, and herb for man’s service, wine that makes glad man’s heart, oil to make his face shine, and bread which strengthens man’s heart.
The psalmist describes the trees of the Lord being full of sap, the cedars of Lebanon which He has planted, where the birds make their nests, the high hills being a refuge for wild goats, and the rocks for the conies, the moon being appointed for seasons, the sun knowing his going down, declaring how manifold are God’s works, in wisdom He has made them all, the earth being full of His riches, so also is the great and wide sea, wherein are innumerable creeping things, both small and great beasts, all waiting upon Him for their food in due season, closing with a vow to sing to the Lord as long as he lives, and be glad in Him, urging sinners to be consumed from the earth, and the wicked to be no more, blessing the Lord once more.
This psalm’s extensive, joyful survey of creation, mountains, valleys, wild animals, trees, and seasons, celebrates God’s wisdom displayed not merely in humanity’s creation, but throughout the entire intricate web of natural life. Its declaration that all creatures wait upon God for their food in due season offers a beautifully humbling reminder that every living thing, humans included, ultimately depends on His ongoing, faithful provision rather than pure self-sufficiency.
