The psalmist pleads, “Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto thee. Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble,” written by one afflicted, and overwhelmed, pouring out his complaint before the Lord, describing his days consumed like smoke, and his bones burned as a hearth.
The psalmist describes his heart being smitten and withered like grass, so that he forgets to eat his bread, by reason of his groaning his bones cleaving to his skin, being like a pelican of the wilderness, an owl of the desert, watching, being as a sparrow alone upon the housetop, his enemies reproaching him all day, comparing his “days,” “yom” in Hebrew, to a shadow that declines, withering away like grass.
The psalmist declares that the Lord shall endure forever, and His remembrance to all generations, promising He will arise and have mercy upon Zion, since the set time to favor her has come, describing how the nations shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth His glory, when He shall appear in His glory, and regard the prayer of the destitute, closing with a remarkable contrast, comparing his own fleeting days to God’s permanence, “Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure… but thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end,” language the New Testament book of Hebrews directly applies to Christ Himself.
This psalmist’s raw description of physical and emotional suffering, comparing himself to a lonely bird and withering grass, gives genuine, permission-granting voice to profound personal affliction without minimizing its real severity. Its closing contrast between human transience and God’s unchanging eternity, language Hebrews applies directly to Christ, offers genuine comfort by grounding temporary personal suffering within the context of a permanent, unshakable divine reality.
