The psalmist calls everyone to sing to the Lord a new song, sing to the Lord all the earth, singing to the Lord, blessing His name, showing forth His salvation from day to day, declaring His glory among the heathen, His wonders among all people, since the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised, He is to be feared above all “gods,” “elohim” in Hebrew.
The psalmist describes how all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens, honor and majesty being before Him, strength and beauty being in His sanctuary, urging the kindreds of the people to give to the Lord glory and strength, giving to the Lord the glory due to His name, bringing an offering and coming into His courts, worshiping the Lord in the beauty of holiness, and fearing before Him, all the earth.
The psalmist declares the heavens shall rejoice, and let the earth be glad, let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof, let the field be joyful, and everything in it, then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice before the Lord, since He comes, for He comes to judge the earth, He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with His truth, a sweeping, joyful psalm envisioning the entirety of creation itself joining together in celebrating God’s righteous reign over all things.
This psalm’s sweeping vision of the entire natural world, heavens, sea, fields, and trees, all joining together in joyful praise offers a beautifully expansive picture of worship extending far beyond human voices alone into all of creation itself. Its bold declaration that all gods of the nations are mere idols while the Lord alone made the heavens challenges every competing claim to ultimate authority with confident, exclusive devotion.
