The psalmist calls everyone to come and sing to the Lord, making a joyful noise to the rock of their salvation, coming before His presence with thanksgiving, and making a joyful noise to Him with psalms, since the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
The psalmist describes how in His hand are the deep places of the earth, the strength of the hills also being His, the sea being His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land, urging everyone to come and worship, and bow down, kneeling before the Lord their “maker,” “asah” in Hebrew, since He is their God, and they are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.
The psalmist urges his listeners, “To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work,” describing how God was grieved with that generation for forty years, and said they are a people who err in their heart, and have not known His ways, so He swore in His wrath that they should not enter into His rest, closing with a solemn warning to learn from history rather than repeating its mistakes.
This psalm’s urgent warning, today if you will hear His voice, harden not your heart, quoted directly in the New Testament book of Hebrews, insists that genuine response to God cannot be indefinitely postponed without real spiritual consequence. Its call to worship, joyful and unrestrained, deliberately paired with this sobering historical warning, shows that genuine praise and genuine accountability belong together rather than existing as separate, unrelated concerns.
