The psalmist declares it is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to His name, O Most High, to show forth His lovingkindness in the morning, and His faithfulness every night, upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery, with a solemn sound upon the harp.
The psalmist declares the Lord has made him glad through His work, and he will triumph in the works of His hands, observing that a brutish man does not know, nor does a fool understand this, that when the “wicked,” “rasha” in Hebrew, spring as the grass, and all the workers of iniquity flourish, it is that they shall be destroyed forever, but the Lord is on high forevermore, since His enemies shall perish, and all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.
The psalmist declares his horn shall be exalted like the horn of a unicorn, being anointed with fresh oil, his eye seeing his desire on his enemies, the righteous flourishing like the palm tree, and growing like a cedar in Lebanon, those planted in the house of the Lord flourishing in the courts of their God, still bringing forth fruit in old age, being fat and flourishing, to show that the Lord is upright, He is his rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him, a fitting Sabbath psalm celebrating the deep satisfaction found in regular, deliberate worship and thanksgiving.
This Sabbath psalm’s beautiful image of the righteous flourishing like a palm tree, still bringing forth fruit even in old age, offers genuine encouragement that fruitful faithfulness can continue meaningfully across an entire lifespan rather than fading with advancing years. Its practice of showing forth lovingkindness both morning and night establishes a rhythm of ongoing, regular gratitude bookending each day with deliberate acknowledgment of God’s faithfulness.
