PSALMS 91 ‐ “He That Dwelleth in the Secret Place”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Buckler” it comes from the Hebrew Word “tsinnah” which means “shield, buckler.”

The psalmist describes the remarkable protection promised to those who dwell close to God. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 91.

The psalmist declares that he who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty, saying of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust,” since He shall deliver from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

The psalmist describes remarkable protection, God covering him with His feathers, and under His wings shall he trust, His truth being a shield and “buckler,” “tsinnah” in Hebrew, so he shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that walks in darkness, a thousand falling at his side, and ten thousand at his right hand, but it shall not come near him, since he has made the Lord his refuge, even the Most High his habitation.

The psalmist promises no evil shall befall him, since God shall give His angels charge over him, to keep him in all his ways, bearing him up in their hands, lest he dash his foot against a stone, describing how he shall tread upon the lion and adder, the young lion and dragon shall he trample underfoot, since God says, “Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation,” a psalm of remarkable, comprehensive promise for those who genuinely dwell close to God.

This beloved psalm’s comprehensive promises of protection, while genuinely encouraging, require the crucial qualifying condition established at its very opening, dwelling in the secret place of the Most High, an ongoing, intimate relationship rather than a magical formula applied from a distance. Its closing divine speech, because he has set his love upon me, therefore I will deliver him, reveals that these remarkable promises flow specifically from genuine, reciprocal relationship rather than mere formulaic recitation.
