David asks the Lord to bow down His ear and hear him, since he is poor and needy, preserving his soul, since he is holy, saving His servant who trusts in Him, being merciful to him, since he cries to Him daily, rejoicing the soul of His servant, since to Him he lifts up his soul.
David declares the Lord is good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in “mercy,” “chesed” in Hebrew, to all who call upon Him, giving ear to his prayer, and attending to the voice of his supplications, declaring among the gods there is none like Him, O Lord, neither are there any works like His works, asking that all nations He has made shall come and worship before Him, and glorify His name, since He is great, and does wondrous things, He alone being God.
David asks to be taught His way, that he may walk in His truth, uniting his heart to fear His name, promising to praise Him with all his heart, and glorify His name forevermore, since His mercy toward him is great, delivering his soul from the lowest hell, describing how the proud have risen against him, seeking after his soul, but the Lord is a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth, asking Him to give His strength to His servant, and save the son of His handmaid, closing with a request for a token for good, that those who hate him may see it and be ashamed, because the Lord has helped and comforted him.
David’s confident declaration, among the gods there is none like you, expresses genuine, exclusive devotion in a world where competing claims to divine authority were common and pressing. His humble self-description, poor and needy, combined with bold requests for God’s help, models prayer that holds together genuine humility and genuine confidence without either canceling out the other.
