PSALMS 85 ‐ “Lord, Thou Hast Been Favourable Unto Thy Land”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Mercy” it comes from the Hebrew Word “chesed” which means “mercy, lovingkindness.”

The psalmist recalls past forgiveness while praying for renewed revival among God’s people. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 85.

The psalmist declares the Lord has been favorable to His land, He has brought back the captivity of Jacob, forgiven the iniquity of His people, and covered all their sin, taking away all His wrath, and turning Himself from the fierceness of His anger.

The psalmist asks God to turn them, and cause His anger toward them to cease, questioning whether He will be angry with them forever, drawing out His anger to all generations, asking Him to revive them again, that His people may rejoice in Him, showing them His “mercy,” “chesed” in Hebrew, and granting them His salvation.

The psalmist declares he will hear what God the Lord will speak, since He will speak peace to His people, and to His saints, but let them not turn again to folly, His salvation being near those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in their land, mercy and truth meeting together, righteousness and peace kissing each other, truth springing out of the earth, and righteousness looking down from heaven, the Lord giving what is good, and their land yielding her increase, righteousness going before Him, and setting us in the way of His steps, a beautifully poetic vision of complete restoration and renewed relationship between God and His people.

This psalm’s stunning poetic image, mercy and truth meeting together, righteousness and peace kissing each other, offers one of Scripture’s most beautiful pictures of complete reconciliation, seemingly opposing divine attributes now working together in perfect harmony. Its honest question, will you be angry with us forever, models genuine faith that can ask hard questions while still trusting God’s ultimate desire to speak peace and bring renewed revival to His people.
