The psalmist declares how amiable are God’s tabernacles, O Lord of hosts, his soul longing, even fainting for the courts of the Lord, his heart and his flesh crying out for the living God, since even the sparrow has found a house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even God’s altars, O Lord of hosts, his King, and his God.
The psalmist declares blessed are those who dwell in God’s house, still praising Him, blessed is the man whose “strength,” “oz” in Hebrew, is in Him, in whose heart are the ways of them, who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well, the rain also filling the pools, going from strength to strength, everyone appearing before God in Zion.
The psalmist prays for God to hear his prayer, and give ear, O God of Jacob, asking Him to behold their shield, and look upon the face of His anointed, declaring, “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness,” since the Lord God is a sun and shield, giving grace and glory, withholding no good thing from those who walk uprightly, closing with the declaration, “O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.”
This psalmist’s famous preference, a doorkeeper in God’s house rather than dwelling comfortably in the tents of wickedness, captures genuine longing for God’s presence that values proximity to Him above even significant earthly comfort or status. Its beautiful image of pilgrims passing through a dry valley and transforming it into a well through their very journey suggests genuine faith can find blessing even amid difficult, unavoidable passages toward God’s presence.
