Asaph calls the people to sing aloud to God their strength, making a joyful noise to the God of Jacob, taking a psalm, bringing here the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery, blowing the “trumpet,” “shofar” in Hebrew, in the new moon, in the time appointed, on their solemn feast day, since this is a statute for Israel, a law of the God of Jacob.
Asaph recounts how God removed the shoulder from the burden of His people, their hands being delivered from the pots, describing how they called in trouble and He delivered them, answering them in the secret place of thunder, proving them at the waters of Meribah, God speaking, “Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me; There shall no strange god be in thee… I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.”
Asaph relays God’s own lament, that His people did not hearken to His voice, and Israel would not accept Him, so He gave them up to their own hearts’ lust, and they walked in their own counsels, expressing genuine longing, “Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways! I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries,” promising that He would feed them also with the finest of the wheat, and with honey out of the rock He would satisfy them, closing with a vision of what remained genuinely possible had Israel only chosen faithfulness over rebellion.
God’s own poignant lament, oh that my people had listened to me, expressed through this psalm, reveals genuine divine longing for a relationship His people repeatedly refused rather than a distant, indifferent deity unmoved by their choices. This psalm’s promise of abundant provision, finest wheat and honey from the rock, describes the genuine flourishing that remained available had Israel simply chosen the path of faithful obedience already being offered to them.
