Asaph calls his people to give ear to his teaching, inclining their ears to the words of his mouth, opening his mouth in a parable, uttering dark sayings of old, which they have heard and known, and their fathers have told them, so they would not hide them from their children, showing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, His strength, and His wonderful works that He has done.
Asaph describes how God established a “testimony,” “eduth” in Hebrew, in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, commanding their fathers to teach their children, that the generation to come might know them, even the children yet unborn, who should arise and declare them to their children, that they might set their hope in God, and not forget His works, but keep His commandments, and not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, that set not their heart aright.
Asaph recounts extensively Israel’s history, the Red Sea crossing, God’s guidance by cloud and fire, water from the rock, manna from heaven, yet the people continuing to sin and provoke the Most High in the wilderness, tempting God in their heart, forgetting His hand and the day He delivered them from the enemy, describing repeated cycles of rebellion, judgment, and restoration throughout the wilderness years and beyond, into the time of Eli and Samuel, until God chose David His servant, taking him from following the sheep, to feed Jacob His people, and Israel His inheritance, so David fed them according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands, a long, sweeping historical psalm designed specifically to teach future generations through Israel’s own remembered story.
This lengthy psalm’s deliberate purpose, teaching future generations through carefully recounted history rather than abstract doctrine alone, models how storytelling and remembered narrative can effectively transmit genuine faith across generational lines. Its honest inclusion of repeated rebellion alongside repeated divine faithfulness avoids sanitizing history, instead using the full, complicated truth as the very foundation for teaching lasting wisdom.
