Asaph declares he cried to God with his voice, even to God with his voice, and He gave ear to him, seeking the Lord in the day of his trouble, his sore running in the night and not ceasing, his soul refusing to be comforted, remembering God and being troubled, complaining and his spirit being overwhelmed.
Asaph asks troubling, honest questions, whether the Lord will cast off forever, and will be favorable no more, whether His mercy is clean gone forever, and His promise fails for evermore, whether God has forgotten to be gracious, and has in anger shut up His tender “mercies,” “rachamim” in Hebrew, confessing this is his own infirmity, but he will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High.
Asaph resolves to remember the works of the Lord, surely remembering His wonders of old, meditating also on all His work, and talking of His doings, asking whose way is so great a God as their God, describing how God’s way is in the sanctuary, He being the God who does wonders, declaring His strength among the people, redeeming His people, the waters seeing Him and being afraid, the thunder of His voice being in the heaven, His way in the sea, and His path in the great waters, His footsteps not being known, leading His people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron, closing with confident trust rediscovered through deliberate remembrance of God’s proven past faithfulness.
Asaph’s honest, troubling questions about whether God’s mercy has permanently ended give genuine voice to the darkest doubts believers sometimes genuinely experience without automatically indicating a lack of real faith. His deliberate practice of remembering God’s specific past deeds offers a concrete, practical strategy for moving through spiritual doubt, anchoring present uncertainty in documented, historical faithfulness rather than present feeling alone.
