Asaph declares that in Judah God is known, His name is great in Israel, His tabernacle also being in Salem, and His dwelling place in Zion, there breaking the arrows of the bow, the shield, the sword, and the “battle,” “milchamah” in Hebrew.
Asaph describes God as more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey, the stouthearted being spoiled, sleeping their sleep, none of the men of might finding their hands, at His rebuke both the chariot and horse being cast into a dead sleep, God being terrible, and who may stand in His sight once He is angry.
Asaph describes how God caused judgment to be heard from heaven, the earth fearing and being still, when God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth, even human wrath praising Him, the remainder of wrath He restrains, urging everyone to vow and pay to the Lord their God, all who are around Him bringing presents to Him who ought to be feared, closing with the observation that He cuts off the spirit of princes, being terrible to the kings of the earth.
Asaph’s declaration that even human wrath ultimately praises God suggests that even hostile, destructive human intentions can be woven into God’s larger sovereign purposes without His ever actually endorsing the evil itself. This psalm’s confident celebration of overwhelming divine power offers real assurance that no earthly military might can ultimately withstand God’s decisive intervention when He chooses to act.
