An aging psalmist reflects on a lifetime of trusting God while still facing present dangers. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 71.
The psalmist declares in the Lord he puts his trust, asking never to be put to confusion, delivering him in His righteousness, and causing him to escape, inclining His ear to him and saving him, being his strong habitation, since He has given commandment to save him, being his rock and fortress.
The psalmist declares he has been held up by God from the womb, and God took him out of his mother’s bowels, his praise continually being of Him, becoming as a wonder to many, since God is his strong “refuge,” “machaseh” in Hebrew, urging Him not to cast him off in the time of old age, nor forsake him when his strength fails, since his enemies speak against him, and those who watch for his soul take counsel together.
The psalmist promises to hope continually, and praise God yet more and more, his mouth showing forth His righteousness and salvation all the day, going forth in the strength of the Lord God, making mention of His righteousness only, asking that even when he is old and grayheaded, God would not forsake him, until he has shown His strength to this generation, and His power to everyone yet to come, closing with confident vows to praise Him with the psaltery, and sing to Him with the harp, his lips greatly rejoicing when he sings to Him, since God has redeemed his soul.
This aging psalmist’s honest request not to be forsaken when his strength fails gives genuine voice to the vulnerability that comes with growing older, a season Scripture treats with real dignity rather than dismissal. His determination to keep declaring God’s strength to the next generation even in old age models purposeful, ongoing faithfulness that continues finding meaning and mission regardless of advancing years.
