David declares, “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is,” written while he was in the wilderness of Judah, describing how he has seen God’s power and glory in the sanctuary.
David declares God’s “lovingkindness,” “chesed” in Hebrew, is better than life, so his lips shall praise Him, blessing Him while he lives, and lifting up his hands in His name, his soul being satisfied as with marrow and fatness, his mouth praising God with joyful lips when he remembers Him upon his bed, and meditates on Him in the night watches.
David declares his soul follows hard after God, God’s right hand upholding him, while those who seek his soul to destroy it shall go into the lower parts of the earth, falling by the sword, being a portion for foxes, but the king shall rejoice in God, everyone who swears by Him shall glory, but the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped, a psalm born from genuine physical deprivation yet overflowing with spiritual satisfaction and longing.
