PSALMS 56 ‐ “What Time I Am Afraid”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Trust” it comes from the Hebrew Word “batach” which means “to trust.”

David declares trust in God even while surrounded by enemies who watch his every move. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 56.

David pleads for mercy, since man would swallow him up, fighting daily oppressing him, his enemies wanting to swallow him up daily, since many fight against him proudly, declaring, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my “trust,” “batach” in Hebrew, “I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.”

David describes how his enemies wrest his words every day, all their thoughts being against him for evil, gathering themselves together, hiding themselves, marking his steps, waiting for his soul, asking that they not escape by iniquity, urging God in anger to cast down the people, declaring that God has counted his wanderings, putting his tears into His bottle, are they not in His book.

David declares that when he cries to God, then his enemies shall turn back, this he knows, for God is for him, promising to offer praises to God, for He has delivered his soul from death, and his feet from falling, that he may walk before God in the light of the living, closing with the same confident declaration repeated from earlier, that in God he has put his trust, he will not be afraid of what man can do to him.

David’s tender image of God putting his tears into a bottle and recording them in a book offers a beautifully personal picture of how closely and carefully God attends to genuine human suffering, nothing forgotten or overlooked. This psalm’s repeated refrain, when I am afraid I will trust in you, models exactly how fear and faith can coexist honestly, faith functioning not as the absence of fear but as the deliberate choice made in spite of it.
