David declares that the “fool,” “naval” in Hebrew, has said in his heart, “There is no God,” describing such people as corrupt, having done abominable iniquity, with none who does good, observing that God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any who understood and sought God.
David laments that every one of them has gone back, they have altogether become filthy, with none who does good, no, not one, asking whether the workers of iniquity have no knowledge, who eat up his people as they eat bread, and have not called upon God, describing how they were in great fear where no fear was, since God has scattered the bones of him who encamps against them.
David expresses shame for those God has despised because He has rejected them, expressing longing that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion, since when God brings back the captivity of His people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad, this psalm closely mirroring Psalm 14 almost word for word, though with slight variations, likely reflecting the same underlying composition adapted for different worship contexts within ancient Israel.
This psalm’s near-identical repetition of Psalm 14 suggests its message about widespread human corruption and practical atheism was considered important enough to preserve in more than one form within Israel’s worship tradition. The slight variations between these two versions offer a small window into how ancient Hebrew poetry could be intentionally adapted and reused across different settings while preserving its essential, urgent message.
