The psalmist calls all people to hear this, both low and high, rich and poor together, his mouth speaking of wisdom, and the meditation of his heart being of understanding, asking why he should fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of his heels compasses him about.
The psalmist observes that those who trust in their “wealth,” “chayil” in Hebrew, and boast in the multitude of their riches, none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him, since the redemption of their soul is precious, and ceases forever, for he sees that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.
The psalmist observes that their inward thought is that their houses shall continue forever, yet man being in honor abides not, being like the beasts that perish, this their way being their folly, yet their posterity approving their sayings, like sheep laid in the grave, death feeding on them, but God will redeem his soul from the power of the grave, since He shall receive him, urging his readers not to be afraid when one is made rich, since when he dies he shall carry nothing away, his glory not descending after him, closing with the sobering observation that man who is in honor and does not understand is like the beasts that perish, a wise, sobering meditation reminding every generation that wealth ultimately provides no lasting security against death’s impartial arrival.
This psalm’s sobering observation that no amount of wealth can redeem a soul from death offers timeless wisdom cutting against any generation’s temptation to place ultimate security in material accumulation rather than genuine relationship with God. Its confident hope that God will redeem the soul from the power of the grave provides real comfort by pointing beyond mere earthly wealth toward something death itself cannot ultimately touch.
