The psalmist declares, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof,” a bold declaration of confidence amid even the most extreme, cosmic upheaval imaginable.
The psalmist describes a “river,” “nahar” in Hebrew, whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High, God being in the midst of her, so she shall not be moved, God helping her right early, the heathen raging and kingdoms being moved, but God uttering His voice and the earth melting.
The psalmist declares the Lord of hosts is with them, the God of Jacob their refuge, urging everyone to come and behold the works of the Lord, what desolations He has made in the earth, making wars cease to the end of the earth, breaking the bow, cutting the spear in two, and burning the chariot in fire, closing with God’s own famous declaration, “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth,” a fitting conclusion urging quiet, confident trust amid every kind of turmoil.
This psalm’s famous invitation, be still and know that I am God, offers a powerful antidote to anxious striving, calling for quiet confidence rather than frantic self-reliance during even the most overwhelming circumstances. Its opening declaration that God remains a very present help in trouble, even amid cosmic upheaval like mountains falling into the sea, provides genuine security that no earthly catastrophe could ever fully undermine.
