The psalmist declares, “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?” describing his tears as his food day and night, while others continually ask where his God is.
The psalmist remembers how he once went with the multitude to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, keeping holy day, then asks his own soul directly, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? “hope,” “yachal” in Hebrew, “in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance,” a striking, honest dialogue between the psalmist and his own troubled emotions.
The psalmist describes his soul cast down within him, remembering God from the land of Jordan, from the Hermonites and the hill Mizar, deep calling unto deep at the noise of God’s waterspouts, all His waves and billows going over him, yet the Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with him, a prayer to the God of his life, repeating the same self-address as before, urging his own soul to hope in God, since he shall yet praise Him, who is the health of his countenance, and his God, a psalm that models honest, ongoing wrestling with spiritual desolation while refusing to abandon hope entirely.
