David declares he waited patiently for the Lord, who inclined to him and heard his cry, bringing him up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, setting his feet upon a rock, establishing his goings, and putting a new song in his mouth, praise to their God, so many shall see it and fear, and trust in the Lord.
David declares that sacrifice and offering God did not desire, but His ears He has opened, “burnt offering,” “olah” in Hebrew, and sin offering He has not required, so he said, “Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart,” words the New Testament directly applies to Christ’s own obedient coming into the world.
David describes preaching righteousness in the great congregation, not restraining his lips, not hiding God’s righteousness within his heart, but declaring His faithfulness and salvation, asking the Lord’s tender mercies not to be withheld from him, since innumerable evils have compassed him about, his heart failing him, pleading for deliverance, and that all who seek Him would rejoice and be glad, closing with genuine confidence, “I am poor and needy; yet the LORD thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God,” a fitting close balancing genuine need with confident trust in God’s attentive care.
David’s declaration, I delight to do your will, your law is within my heart, expresses genuine internalized devotion rather than merely external religious compliance, language the New Testament recognizes as ultimately fulfilled in Christ’s own perfect obedience. This psalm’s honest acknowledgment of being poor and needy, paired with confident trust that the Lord thinks upon him, models genuine dependence that never confuses neediness with abandonment.
