David asks the Lord to plead his cause with those who strive with him, and fight against those who fight against him, taking hold of shield and buckler, and standing up for his help, drawing out the spear and stopping the way against his persecutors, asking his soul to be told that God is his salvation.
David describes his enemies who reward him evil for good, though when they were sick, he clothed himself with sackcloth and humbled his soul with fasting, behaving as though it were his friend or brother, bowing down heavily as one who mourns for his mother, yet in his own “adversity,” “tsela” in Hebrew, they rejoiced and gathered together, tearing him without ceasing, mocking him and gnashing upon him with their teeth.
David asks how long the Lord will look on, pleading to be rescued from their destructions, his darling from the lions, promising to give thanks in the great congregation, and praise Him among much people, asking that those who wrongfully rejoice over him not do so, and that his righteous cause be vindicated, closing with a vow that his tongue shall speak of God’s righteousness and of His praise all the day long, once vindication finally comes.
David’s painful description of former friends turning against him precisely when he needed support most captures a genuinely difficult experience many people encounter, betrayal from those who once received genuine kindness and care. This psalm’s honest plea for God to actively intervene, rather than merely observe, gives voice to the real human need for active vindication rather than passive acceptance of ongoing injustice.
