PSALMS 34 ‐ “O Taste and See That the Lord Is Good”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Taste” it comes from the Hebrew Word “ta’am” which means “to taste, perceive.”

David praises God after narrowly escaping danger by feigning madness before a hostile king. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 34.

David declares he will bless the Lord at all times, His praise continually in his mouth, his soul making her boast in the Lord, inviting others to magnify the Lord with him, and exalt His name together, since he sought the Lord, and He heard him, delivering him from all his fears.

David describes how those who look to Him are lightened, and their faces are not ashamed, this poor man crying, and the Lord hearing him, saving him out of all his troubles, since the angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and delivers them, urging everyone to “taste,” “ta’am” in Hebrew, and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man who trusts in Him.

David urges his listeners to fear the Lord, since there is no want to those who fear Him, the young lions lacking and suffering hunger, but those who seek the Lord shall not want any good thing, inviting his children to hearken, teaching them the fear of the Lord, asking who desires life and loves many days, that he should see good, urging them to depart from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it, since the Lord’s eyes are upon the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry, but His face is against those who do evil, closing with the assurance that the Lord is near to those of a broken heart, and saves those of a contrite spirit, redeeming the soul of His servants, and none who trust in Him shall be desolate.

David’s memorable invitation to taste and see that the Lord is good offers a beautifully experiential picture of faith, not merely intellectual assent, but something genuinely tasted and personally verified through actual experience. This psalm’s tender assurance that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted offers real comfort for anyone currently experiencing genuine grief or emotional devastation.
