David declares he puts his trust in the Lord, asking never to be ashamed, delivering him in His righteousness, asking Him to be his strong rock and house of defense, for His name’s sake leading and guiding him, pulling him out of the net secretly laid for him, since He is his strength.
David declares, “Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth,” words Jesus Himself would later echo from the cross, describing his “trouble,” “tsarah” in Hebrew, his eye consumed with grief, his soul and belly, his life spent with grief, his years with sighing, his strength failing, and his bones consumed, being a reproach among his enemies, forgotten as a dead man out of mind, like a broken vessel.
David expresses trust despite hearing the slander of many, fear on every side, while their counsel is to take away his life, yet declaring, “But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God. My times are in thy hand,” asking to be delivered from his enemies, blessing the Lord who has shown marvellous kindness in a strong city, closing with encouragement to all who hope in the Lord, “Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart.”
David’s declaration, into your hand I commit my spirit, carries added significance knowing Jesus would speak these very words as His final utterance from the cross, showing how deeply the Psalms shaped even Christ’s own final moments. This psalm’s honest acknowledgment of genuine trouble alongside genuine trust, my times are in your hand, models faith that surrenders control without denying real difficulty.
