David calls on the mighty to give unto the Lord glory and strength, to give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name, and worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, then describes the “voice,” “qol” in Hebrew, of the Lord as being upon the waters, the God of glory thundering, the Lord being upon many waters.
David describes this voice powerfully, being full of majesty, breaking the cedars, even the cedars of Lebanon, making them skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young unicorn, dividing the flames of fire, shaking the wilderness, even the wilderness of Kadesh, making the hinds calve, and discovering the forests, while in His temple everyone speaks of His glory.
David declares that the Lord sits upon the flood, and sits as King forever, closing with a fitting benediction, “The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace,” moving from the overwhelming, thunderous power displayed in the storm to the tender, personal blessing of strength and peace given to His own people.
David’s vivid poetic description of a thunderstorm, cedars breaking and wilderness shaking before God’s powerful voice, offers a memorable picture of divine majesty displayed through ordinary natural phenomena that anyone could witness and recognize. This psalm’s closing turn from cosmic power to personal blessing shows that the same God who commands thunder and lightning also delights in giving His people strength and genuine peace.
