David celebrates the earth’s Creator while asking who may properly approach His holy presence. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Psalm 24.
David declares that the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof, the world, and those who dwell in it, since He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods, asking who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord, and who shall stand in His holy place.
David answers his own question, describing one with clean hands and a pure “heart,” “levav” in Hebrew, who has not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully, promising he shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation, this being the generation of those who seek Him, who seek God’s face.
The psalm closes with a dramatic, liturgical call, addressing the gates themselves, “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in,” asking who this King of glory is, answering that it is the Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle, repeating the call for the gates to lift up their heads, this King of glory being identified as the Lord of hosts, a triumphant, processional conclusion likely used originally when the ark of the covenant was brought into Jerusalem.
David’s dramatic call for the ancient gates to lift up their heads before the King of glory captures genuine, celebratory anticipation of God’s presence entering into the very center of His people’s worship and daily life. This psalm’s pairing of cosmic ownership, the earth is the Lord’s, with personal moral qualification, clean hands and a pure heart, reminds readers that approaching a holy God always requires genuine inward integrity, not merely outward ceremony.
