David declares that the “fool,” “nabal” in Hebrew, has said in his heart, “There is no God,” describing such people as corrupt, having done abominable works, with none who does good, observing that the Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any who understood and sought after God.
David laments that all have gone aside, and together become filthy, with none who does good, no, not one, asking whether the workers of iniquity have no knowledge, who eat up his people as they eat bread, and do not call upon the Lord, describing how they were in great fear, since God is in the generation of the righteous.
David describes how the wicked have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge, expressing longing that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion, since when the Lord brings back the captivity of His people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad, a psalm that honestly assesses widespread human corruption while still holding firmly to hope for God’s eventual, complete deliverance.
David’s blunt assessment that practical atheism, living as though there is no God regardless of formal belief, leads directly to widespread moral corruption offers a penetrating diagnosis still relevant across every generation. This psalm’s honest acknowledgment that none does good, no not one, anticipates the New Testament’s later teaching on universal human sinfulness, requiring a salvation that must come entirely from outside ourselves.
