David declares that in the Lord he puts his trust, asking why anyone would tell his soul to flee as a bird to their mountain, since the wicked bend their bow and make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart, observing that if the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do.
David affirms that the Lord is in His holy “temple,” “heikal” in Hebrew, the Lord’s throne is in heaven, His eyes behold, His eyelids try the children of men, testing the righteous, while His soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.
David describes how the Lord will rain snares, fire and brimstone, and a horrible tempest upon the wicked, this being the portion of their cup, since the righteous Lord loves righteousness, and His countenance beholds the upright, closing this brief but confident psalm with settled trust that God remains sovereign and attentive even when circumstances suggest fleeing might seem the only reasonable option.
David’s refusal to flee, choosing instead to remain firmly grounded in trust when everything around him seemed unstable, models courageous faith that stands its ground rather than panicking under pressure. This psalm’s confident affirmation that the Lord remains enthroned in heaven, actively watching and testing every heart, offers real stability during seasons when the foundations themselves seem genuinely threatened.
